Since Likert Scale questions use a scale, people are not required to express an opinion of one or the other, but allow them to be neutral if they wish. Nevertheless, a major drawback in using Likert Scales is that respondents tend to either choose the most extreme option or not express an opinion at all. You can find an example of questions about Likert`s bipolar scale in our motivation and shopping experience survey template. A Likert scale assumes that the strength/intensity of a setting is linear, i.e. on a continuum from very favorable to strongly contradictory, and assumes that the parameters can be measured. If you used Likert elements in a survey, averages, median values, and frequencies are the tools needed for analysis. Trends in the data give you answers to the questions that this survey triggered. The notions of central tendency are often applicable at the item level – that is, the answers often show an almost normal distribution. The validity of these measures depends on the underlying interval nature of the scale. If the nature of the interval is assumed for the comparison of two groups, the t-test of t-type samples is not unfit. If non-parametric tests are to be performed, it is recommended that the pratt (1959) be modified from the standard wilcoxon signed Rank test.
The question of whether individual items can be considered data at regular intervals or whether they should be treated as categorical and classified data is the subject of significant disagreement in the literature with strong convictions as to the most applicable methods. This disagreement can be traced in many ways to the extent that Likert-Items are interpreted as ordinal data. Designing a scale with a balanced keying (an equal number of positive and negative statements and, in particular, an equal number of positive and negative statements on each position or subject in question) can eliminate the problem of tolerance distortion, since the tolerance of positive elements compensates for the tolerance of elements considered negative, but defensive tendencies, Central and distortions of social desire are a little more problematic. Answers to multiple Likert questions can be summed, provided that all questions use the same Likert scale and that the scale is a reasonable approach to an interval scale, in which case the central boundary allows the data to be treated as interval data that measures a latent variable.
